About Celestia

Celestia is a proof-of-stake data availability network where other blockchains publish their data; TIA pays fees and secures it.

Celestia is a 'modular' blockchain. Instead of running applications itself, it stores and orders data for other chains, called rollups. A rollup posts its transaction data to Celestia so that anyone can check it is available. This makes it cheaper and simpler to launch a new blockchain.

TIA is the network's token. Rollups pay TIA to publish data ('blobspace'), TIA can serve as gas on rollups, holders stake it with validators to secure the network, and it is used to vote on network changes. Celestia runs proof of stake on CometBFT and the Cosmos SDK with up to 100 validators. A validator that signs two conflicting blocks loses 2% of its stake.

The network launched on 31 October 2023 with 1 billion TIA. There is no supply cap: inflation started at 8% a year and was cut by upgrades to about 2.5% from November 2025, falling towards a 1.5% floor. By 1 October 2026 the total supply was about 1.18 billion TIA.

Celestia Labs builds the main software, which is open source. In 2026 it introduced Fibre, a design for very high data throughput, and in July 2026 it acquired Sovereign Labs. The TIA price on 1 October 2026 was about 98% below its February 2024 high.

What it is used for

  • Paying fees to publish rollup data (blobspace)
  • Gas token for rollups built on Celestia
  • Staking to validators to secure the network
  • Voting on governance proposals
